Is there a vegetarian döner?
Short answer
Yes. Many shops sell falafel, halloumi, grilled vegetables, or a plant-based patty in the same bread-and-salad format. Those are alternatives to spit meat, not one standard vegetarian recipe.
Yes. Many shops sell a vegetarian item in the same bread-and-salad format, using falafel, halloumi, fried or grilled vegetables, or a plant-based patty. It is reasonable to call that a vegetarian döner-style sandwich on a menu, though traditional döner itself names meat cooked on a turning spit.
The alternatives are not equivalent. Falafel supplies a legume-based fried filling. Halloumi is cheese and therefore vegetarian but not vegan. Gemüse kebab may mean vegetables added to chicken, not a meatless item. A patty can contain wheat, soy, or other allergens.
Current menus show the range. GDK USA’s August 2026 menu lists a Veggie Kebab with a jalapeño black-bean patty, salad, sauces, and toasted sesame bread. California operator DonerG identifies falafel among its menu offerings. Berlin’s Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap site confirms a to-go vegetable-kebab stand, but it does not publish a full official ingredient list online; ask at the shop rather than treating “Gemüse” as proof that an order is meatless.
Vegetarian and vegan are different checks
Yogurt and feta contain milk; mayonnaise-style garlic sauce can contain egg; bread commonly contains wheat and may carry sesame. A plant-based filling can share a grill, fryer, knife, or prep surface with meat. Whether that matters depends on dietary practice and allergy risk, but the menu label does not answer it.
| Filling | Vegetarian? | Vegan? | Extra check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Falafel | Usually | Often, if the mix and fryer allow | Shared oil with meat |
| Halloumi | Yes | No — it is cheese | Griddle contact with meat |
| Vegetable kebab | Only if no meat is added | Only if sauces and cheese are too | “Gemüse” can still mean chicken |
| Bean or plant patty | Usually | Depends on the binder and bun | Wheat, soy, egg |

Seitan and other plant “döner” products appear in some German cities as a dedicated vegan line. They are still not the classic spit. US German-döner counters with a two-meat cone may have no vegetarian protein at all except salad. In that case a salad box without meat is a vegetable plate, not a substitute sandwich.
Ask for the named filling and a full ingredient check: Is “vegetable kebab” meatless? Is the sauce dairy- or egg-free? Is the bread vegan? Are fryer or grill surfaces shared? A vegetable-and-salad box without meat may be available even where no replacement protein exists, but it is nutritionally different from falafel or a bean patty.
If you eat fish or cheese but not meat, halloumi is the usual next ask; if you eat neither, falafel or a labeled vegan patty is the path. Extra salad in the bread is a vegetable sandwich unless that is actually what you want.
