Is döner vegan?
Short answer
Classic döner is not vegan — it is spit-roasted meat. A vegan order is possible only if the shop offers a plant filling and can confirm that bread, sauce, cheese, and shared equipment fit your practice.
Traditional döner is meat. A vegan döner-style meal exists only as a substitution: falafel, seitan, roasted vegetables, or a plant patty, plus bread and sauces that contain no animal products, prepared in a way you accept.
GDK USA’s August 2026 Veggie Kebab uses a jalapeño black-bean patty, salad, sauces, and toasted sesame bread. That can be vegetarian and still fail a vegan check if a sauce contains milk or egg, or if the bread formula includes dairy. DonerG lists falafel; tahini is typically vegan but is a sesame product. Berlin shops sometimes sell seitan or other plant döner; those are local menu facts, not a US standard.
Five checks, not one label
| Check | Why it fails vegan orders |
|---|---|
| Filling | Spit meat; halloumi; yogurt marinades |
| Bread | Occasional milk or egg; sesame is a separate allergen |
| Sauce | Yogurt, mayonnaise, honey, cheese sauce |
| Cheese | Feta, halloumi, melted cheese |
| Equipment | Shared spit knives, grills, fryers, sauce spoons |
“Gemüse” (vegetable) kebab is a famous trap: it can mean chicken with roasted vegetables. Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap in Berlin is a to-go vegetable-kebab stand whose public site does not publish a full ingredient list; ask at the shop.
If the shop cannot show ingredients, it cannot honestly promise a vegan sandwich. Cross-contact is a personal threshold: some vegans accept a shared grill, others do not. The restaurant has to describe the setup; you decide.

Practical takeaway
Do not order “a döner” and hope. Name the plant filling, name the sauces you will accept, and skip cheese. If the only vegetarian item is halloumi, that order is not vegan.
Honey in a chili sauce, egg in a mayonnaise garlic sauce, and milk in bread are the usual misses after someone has already skipped the meat. GDK’s Veggie Kebab still uses the house sauces and sesame bread unless you change them. DonerG’s falafel still needs a sauce check.
If the shop uses a shared spit knife on a plant patty “just to cut it,” that is cross-contact. Some vegans accept it; some do not. The staff should describe the step. You should not have to guess from the menu photography. See does döner contain dairy and does döner contain sesame.
A vegan box is often easier than a vegan sandwich because you can skip bread if the loaf formula is unknown — then you still have sauce and fryer questions. There is no vegan döner meat. There is a vegan meal in a döner shop, when the shop can support it. Ask like a checklist, not like a hope.
If the only plant item is a bean patty on sesame bread with two house sauces, that is a maybe, not a yes, until the sauces and bun are named. GDK’s August 2026 Veggie Kebab is that kind of maybe.
