# How do you eat a German döner?

Use both hands and keep the sandwich partly inside its paper or foil. The wrapper supports the cut flatbread and catches sauce as you work downward. A heavily filled döner is easier to rotate a little between bites than to unwrap completely.

Standing or takeaway service is common because the Berlin-style sandwich developed as portable street food. Berlin’s official visitor site describes the city’s [döner as a flatbread pocket with meat, salad, and sauce](https://www.visitberlin.de/en/doner-kebab) and lists many snack counters. That does not mean sitting is wrong: döner shops range from windows and kiosks to full Turkish restaurants.

## Match the technique to the format

- **Cut flatbread:** keep it wrapped, use two hands, and avoid squeezing the center.
- **Dürüm or wrap:** peel the paper down in stages so the bottom stays closed.
- **Box or bowl:** use a fork and mix only enough to distribute sauce without turning fries into mash.
- **Plate:** eat the meat, bread, salad, and sauce in whatever combination you prefer.

Current operator menus show all four possibilities. [GDK USA](https://gdkusa.com/menu/) offers sandwiches, wraps, boxes, and rice. [DonerG](https://donerg.com/) describes wraps, bowls, and plates. A standing-only rule would misdescribe those real formats.

## Ordering and etiquette

Order at the counter or kiosk when directed, answer the meat and sauce questions, and move aside while the food is assembled. At a sit-down restaurant, follow normal table service. Tipping customs depend on the country and service model, not on whether the meat is döner.

The practical concern is mess: ask for extra napkins, keep the open side upright, and do not remove the entire wrapper at once. If you are walking, stop for the first few bites while the sandwich is fullest.
