# Does döner contain dairy?

Dairy is common on döner, but it is not built into the word. The usual sources are sauces and cheese. Meat marinades and some breads can also contain milk. A lactose-free or milk-allergy order needs a component-by-component check.

Germany’s meat guidelines for döner describe customary additions that can include milk and yogurt in the meat product itself. That is German labeling context, not a US ingredient statement. In August 2026, [Döner Haus](https://doner.haus/) described its meats as filler-free; that claim is about its own cones, not about its creamy garlic sauce. GDK’s [allergen notices](https://germandonerkebab.com/ie/allergen-information) state that milk is present in the operation.

## Where milk shows up

| Component | Dairy risk | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Garlic / white / yogurt sauce | High | Classic vehicle for yogurt |
| Herb sauce | Medium | Often dairy-based |
| Chili sauce | Lower, not zero | Still ask |
| Feta, halloumi, cheese sauce | High | GDK lists feta and melted cheese sauce as add-ons |
| Ayran | High | It is a yogurt drink; see [what is ayran](/what-is-ayran/) |
| Bread | Possible | Less common than sauce, still not “never” |
| Meat cone | Possible | Marinades and German customary recipes can include milk |

Tzatziki is dairy. Toum typically is not. Tahini typically is not. Borrowing those sauces across menus is why a “white sauce” guess fails.

For a milk allergy, cross-contact matters: shared spoons, the same knife that cut a cheesy side, a press used for garlic bread. GDK’s US allergen page warns that it cannot guarantee allergen-free food. Preference (“I’d rather skip yogurt”) and allergy are different conversations.

## Practical takeaway

If you avoid dairy, hold cheese and ask which sauces are milk-free. If you have an allergy, ask for written ingredients and handling. See [what sauces go on döner](/what-sauces-go-on-doner/) and [is döner vegan](/is-doner-vegan/).

The [Döner Guide meat and allergens discussion](https://donerguide.com/meat-and-halal/) keeps dairy, gluten, and halal as separate questions.

Lactose intolerance and milk allergy are not the same request. An intolerance might be fine with a chili-only sandwich and no ayran. An allergy needs the full handling conversation, including whether feta is prepped on the same board. GDK’s August 2026 add-ons include feta and melted cheese sauce — easy to skip if you say so, easy to miss if you say “the usual.”

Ayran in the fridge is a yes/no dairy drink, not a secret sauce. If you can drink yogurt, you can probably drink ayran; if you cannot, skip both.

Butter in bread is less common than sauce dairy but not impossible. If the allergy is severe, ask about the loaf, not only the white sauce. Cross-contact from grated feta on a shared board is the other miss. Preference (“hold the yogurt”) is easier than allergy, and the staff need to know which conversation you are having.
