# Döner box vs sandwich

The sandwich is the Berlin street form: toasted or cut flatbread packed with shaved meat, vegetables, and sauce. The box is the fork form: the same shop’s meat and toppings in a container. You are choosing a carrier, not a different cuisine.

[GDK USA’s August 2026 menu](https://gdkusa.com/menu/) lists the Original sandwich, a wrap, a fries box, a fries-and-salad box, a salad-focused gym box, and a rice bowl. [Döner Haus](https://doner.haus/menu/doner-haus-east-village) lists sandwich, wrap, and box side by side. That reuse of one spit across formats is the point.

## What actually changes

| | Sandwich | Box |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hands | Two hands, paper on | Fork |
| Bread | Usually wheat pide or similar | Optional; sometimes on the side |
| Base | The bread | Fries, salad, rice, or a mix |
| Travel | Messy if unwrapped | Steam softens fries under a lid |
| Gluten | Bread is the obvious wheat | Meat, sauce, and fryer still count |

A box is related to a German *Dönerteller* (plate) but is usually smaller and more portable. A “bowl” on a US menu is often the same idea with a wider dish. See [what is a döner box](/what-is-a-doner-box/).

## When to pick which

Pick the sandwich if you want the Berlin eating experience and a toasted crust. Pick a salad box if you want to skip bread — then still ask about sauce and meat portion. Pick a fries box if you want a hot, saucy fork meal and accept that it is not a lighter sandwich. Pick rice if the shop’s rice bowl is what they actually cook well.

Calories do not follow the heading. There is no category-wide count; see [how many calories](/how-many-calories-in-a-doner/). For gluten, see [is the meat gluten-free](/is-the-meat-gluten-free/).

## Practical takeaway

Ask four questions: What is the base? Is salad included? Which sauces come automatically? Is bread on the side? Then order the format that matches how you will eat it — walking, at a table, or later as leftovers.

The [Döner Guide box chapter](https://donerguide.com/the-doner-box/) covers box, bowl, and plate variations.

A sandwich is the better souvenir of Berlin. A box is the better desk lunch if you have a fork and nowhere to lean. If you will refrigerate part of it, the box wins again because you can keep sauce off the meat; see [leftovers](/leftovers/). If you want the toasted crust, there is no box equivalent — that crunch is the bread.

Loaded fries sit next to this choice rather than inside it. GDK’s August 2026 menu lists doner fries with cheese as a separate item. That is a side or a meal of its own, not a salad box in disguise.

If you are undecided, order the sandwich and a small fries rather than a fries box. You keep the toasted bread and you still get potatoes. You also see what the shop’s spit meat tastes like in its classic form.
